Tornadoes & Severe Weather

Tornado Watch: The National Weather Service issues a tornado watch when conditions are favorable for the development of tornadoes in and close to the watch area. Watches are generally issued for the duration of a 4 to 8 hour period, well in advance of the actual occurrence of severe weather. During the watch, people should be prepared to move to a place of safety if threatening weather approaches.

Tornado Warning: The National Weather Service issues a tornado warning when a tornado is indicated by radar or sighted by spotters. People in the affected area should seek safe shelter immediately.

Outdoor Warning System: The National Weather Service will sound sirens just like a tornado warning if strong winds in excess of 70 miles per hour are predicted.

IC Alert: The IC Alert system will only be activated when storm threats are in the immediate vicinity of campus. Severe weather sirens are activated by the City of Jacksonville on an all-city basis.
